Take control of your career
Have you been downsized and are
unsure what to do next? Are you unhappy in your present job? Do you
need help with your resume? Are you actively looking for a job but
getting nowhere? Do you want to change careers? A career coach can
help. Career coaches are trained to assist people in making and
carrying out decisions and plans to achieve career goals. They
tailor their services to the specific needs of the person seeking
help.
What will the coach
do for me?
The coach will help you understand your strengths, weaknesses and
work style and how they fit into different occupational settings;
the coach will teach and train you on job search techniques and
behaviors; the coach will give you feedback and insight into your
self presentation and image and the coach will provide inspiration
and guidance through a transition period. The coach will not find
you a job or supply you with job leads.
What is my role in
the process?
In order for the coaching experience to be productive, you will need
to listen and be open to suggestions, you will need to execute and
follow through on your plans and you will have to take charge of
your career.
Do I meet with the
coach in person?
Although coaches encourage and enjoy meeting with their clients face
to face, all the coaches listed have experience in and are
comfortable coaching you via phone and email.
How should I choose a
coach?
A satisfying coaching experience requires having good rapport with
the coach. Call 2 or 3 coaches. Each of the coaches listed will be
happy to speak with you before you make your decision. This
conversation will give you an opportunity to get to know the coach,
their philosophy of practice and how that would fit with the
services you need. They will not make suggestions or give you
direction on your specific situation during the initial
conversation.
How will I evaluate
each coach?
Do your due diligence when selecting a career coach. Ask about
credentials. Who issues the credential? What did they need to do to
obtain it? Ask about their experience. Does the coach have
familiarity with accounting/finance professionals? Has the coach
worked with others in your industry? Has the coach worked with
others at your job level? Ask for a detailed explanation of
services. What are their fees? Are they hourly, per service, or a
combination? What method of payment do they accept? Are there
additional fees? Will they charge for every phone call or email?
What does a coach
charge?
Generally, fees are in the $100 to $200 per hour range. Some coaches
bill in increments of 1/4 or 1/2 hour. Additionally, some coaches
offer package pricing for multiple services and some coaches have
set fees for specific services such as writing or critiquing a
resume.
